The bible says that we should be hardworking people of integrity, so that we may be happy and prosperous.
A few months ago, when I was meditating on these verses, I thought that hard work would make someone rich, and that integrity would make someone happy.
How? By working hard, one can ensure that one has food for the day, for example.
And as for integrity, well, with a clean conscience and nothing to hide, the confidence and peace of mind that accompanies such a person is bound to bring happiness.
However, this year as I continued to meditate on this verse, I felt that hard work does make someone happy, and integrity does produce wealth. How?
Hard work gives someone a sense of achievement, a sense of fulfilment and the worth of one’s work. It helps one to be proud of him/herself. That – in itself, can make you happy. E.g. by completing an important project/paper.
Integrity on the other hand produces a pure heart, which therefore attracts favour from both God and man, and when people are gracious and kind towards someone….that usually results in good prosperity.
Now that I think about it, the combination of both hard work and integrity produces both happiness and prosperity. I’m cool with it like that, and I will strive to be a hardworking a person of integrity.
What about you? Do you have a theme verse(s) for this year? Here’s my theme passage:
Ps 128:1 – A Song of Ascents. Blessed is every one who fears the LORD, who walks in his ways!
2 You shall eat the fruit of the labour of your hands; you shall be happy, and it shall be well with you.
